Friendly Friday Reminder

It’s hot and humid out there! Complain all you want about the heat and humidity this weekend, and I am just as guilty as the next creature of being uncomfortable with the sudden jump to summer, but let me ask you this. Do you remember the miserable, snowy, cold winter?

Well, just in case you forgot, let me remind you. Just 16 short weeks ago we were in the middle of a blizzard and waking up to two plus feet of snow here south of Boston, MA. The pattern of weekend winter storms was just beginning. Remember?

Let’s hope the pattern of hot, humid summer weather is not beginning for us just quite yet; after all, we haven’t had much of a spring. In the meantime, stay cool and hydrated and enjoy the heat wave!

“Meet Me Monday:” Chewey’s Story

I am pleased to introduce you to Chewey (Chewbacca), the lovely, longtime cat companion of twitter pal, Carrie (@cat_phenom). Chewey’s mommy, Carrie, was nice enough to share their story. Actually, Carrie wrote the majority of it. I think you will enjoy reading about how they saved each other and their love story.

Chewey is a 16 year old, female, black and white, domestic short hair (DSH) feline. Chewey lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her humans: two children, mommy, and daddy, and lots of fursiblings: cat brothers Fuzzy (age 1, DLH) and Salem (age 2, DSH), puppy brother, Buddy (age 6 months, black lab) who she does not like at all, and eight hamsters. Carrie says Chewey likes her mommy, getting biscuits, eating wet food, sunbathing, looking at birds, playing with toys, and catnip. Chewey dislikes furbrothers Fuzzy, Salem, and Buddy, and everyone else, except her mommy. Sounds to me that Carrie is definitely Chewey’s person.

Chewey was found at an animal shelter at six weeks of age with several other kittens after being in a foster home. Chewey was not the original cat that Carrie had planned on adopting. Sadly, the original kitty was sick and unadoptable, but this ended up being fortuitous for another kitty. Since Carrie was already approved as an adopter, she had the pick of any of the other adoptable cats at the shelter. Carrie says Chewey “was perfect right from the start.”

Carrie tells us how she came to choose the kitten that would become her Chewey, “I saw Chewey jumping around in a cage – she was very fuzzy, had 3 little black dots on her nose (that have since fused into one dot), and was full of spunk. I knew she’d be perfect.”

Carries continues to tell us what was so special about her first interaction with Chewey, “The first time I held Chewey (Chewbacca), she looked up at me with her cute little kitten face and bit me right in between my nostrils. If you’ve ever been bitten by sharp kitten teeth right there, you’ll know how painful that is. I liked her independent kitten sassiness. She’s proven to be the alpha cat/animal in our house.” Ouchies on the kitten bite!

I asked Carrie if there was anything else she wanted to share about Chewey and she shared the following.

Sadly, Chewey was diagnosed with kidney disease in November 2012. She’s lived a long, very healthy life. She’s been my best friend through a lot of difficult times. One night she became very ill. She wasn’t walking, was groaning and dragging herself when she walked, and parked herself in her litter box and wouldn’t get out. I took her to the vet to find out her body temp was only 90 degrees. The vet didn’t think she was going to make it. I was heartbroken. I couldn’t stop crying. She was my best friend. I knew she was older and that this day would come one day, but I wasn’t ready.

The vet kept her to give her IV fluids, and wrapped her in a warming blanket to elevate her body temp. He was very honest & said it wasn’t looking good, but said that he’d call me in a few hours. Long story short, she made a miraculous recovery! I give her IV fluids as needed, she’s on a special kidney diet of wet food, which she loves, and while she’s still frail and boney, she has even started jumping back up in bed with me.

I don’t know how much longer we’ll have together, and it will still break my heart when she goes to the rainbow bridge, but I’m enjoying each moment I can with her. She’s more than just a pet or a cat… she senses things, she’s comforting, and she’s brought a great deal of joy to our lives.

My mamma went through this with one of her cats, Smuffy, the first cat I ever lived with and loved, so we can appreciate what Carrie is going through with Chewey. Many thanks to Carrie for sharing Chewey’s story and being a feature “Meet Me Monday” on my blog. Please leave a comment for Carrie and or Chewey below. If you would like to share your story, please email me at abbydawgblog@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Remembering Gorgeous Gwenie

November 18, 1996 to May 25, 2013

Many of you already know that we all lost a dear and sweet twitter pal Saturday as she crossed OTRB. Gorgeous Gwenie (@Gorgeousgwenie) was the beloved doggie companion and best friend to her daddy (@paulkuss2012). They spent more than 16 ½ years together.

You can tell by the photos and tweets that they loved each other very, very much. Gwenie lived a long, happy life and was truly a blessing for her daddy and all that knew her. In Twitterville alone, Gwenie touched a lot of lives with almost 3,000 followers! No doubt at all how much Gwenie is loved and will be sorely missed, by both her real life and her virtual family and friends.

So, Mamma and I wanted to do something nice for Gwenie and her daddy. Mamma and I have lost a few cats and humans over the years, and mamma lost a dog only a couple weeks before adopting me, so we know this is going to be a difficult, lonely time for Gwenie’s daddy. We hope he knows there are a lot of us here to talk to when and if he feels like doing so. Everyone deals with these things in their own way and in their own time, but knowing they are not alone is a good thing.

When someone dies you feel so helpless and want to do something to remember the dearly departed, as well as to console the grieving loved ones. Twitter pals have united in remembering Gwenie and showing support for her daddy by displaying avatars with Gwenie’s photo and the words “Forever Gorgeous.”

Friends, acquaintances, and strangers have also shared many messages of condolences. The outpouring of love on various social media networks has been amazing. Anipals and doggie pals are really great at rallying together.

Gwenie - 1 Week Old

I wanted to share some of Gwenie’s photos here that I got from her Twitter and Facebook pages with her daddy’s permission.

I also hope you will visit YouTube where Gwenie’s daddy posted videos as a memorial to his gorgeous girl.

"Meet Me Monday:" Riley's Story

Riley (@RileyDevilDog) is a twitter pal originally from Colorado. She says her story is “dull” because her mom “just went to the shelter and got me,” but Riley is anything but dull. I may be a little biased in telling Riley’s story because I think she is pawsome! Riley is a good friend and helps to make sure pals are dressed up properly whether it is for birthdays, holidays, or #wigitupWednesday events like Pet Cancer Awareness, or even just for TV watching fun, like for Grimm. Riley was very kind to share her story of adoption/rescue. There are lots of amazing parts to Riley’s story – enjoy!

Riley is a 12 year-old, spayed female, dobie-mix (Doberman). Her fur color is black with brown markings and a patch of white on her chest. Riley’s mom got Riley at age 8 weeks old from the “Dumb Friends League” in Denver. This is the same place that Riley’s older brother, Tucker (R.I.P.), and her current sister, Sugar, were adopted.

(Riley with Tucker)

So how did Riley end up at the shelter? As Riley tells us, “According to the shelter, stupid humans owned a Doberman they were breeding, but they also let it run loose. It had a litter and they must’ve thought we were purebred as they docked our tails. Once they figured out we weren’t purebred they dumped us in the yard to die. A neighbor brought me and my litter mates to the shelter.” Thank goodness for that neighbor to save Riley and her litter mates!

(Sugar and Riley)

Riley currently lives in Maine with her mom and fursis, Sugar, who is about 9 years-old. Sugar was supposed to be an Australian shepherd mix, but Riley says, “It’s doubtful,” and that Sugar is probably a “lab/chow mix and some other stuff,” and Sugar “has a spotted tongue.” Riley was her mom’s first experience training a puppy and Riley says, “I only had to be potty trained which I learned super fast. Mom never had a puppy before so it was pretty lucky that what she did worked.” Sounds like Riley’s mom is super smart!

So I asked Riley what her likes were and she said, “Toys, treats, car rides, I said toys, right? I like them a lot. Sometimes I bring them on walks. Plus anything that involves Mom, or trips to the beach. Barking at the squirrels in the trees is especially fun. If it bugs Mom it’s a bonus.”

Speaking of bugging Mom, Riley is famous for staring. “I’m famous for staring! I stare at Mom a lot for all different reasons, and any other human that crosses my path, if I’m in the mood.” Anyone who really gets to know Riley realizes that, “I’m a total goof ball. I always look serious in pics – and at the vet! - but I’m really a nut!” Hmm, wonder where the “devil dog” came from?! Bol!

Riley dislikes the vet, as she says, “Big time! Though I’m super well behaved with the humans there. They think I’m a saint. As if! I didn’t use to hate them, but I got super sick (with hemolytic anemia) a few years ago and nearly died. I had to get blood tests 6 days a week after getting out of the hospital, and it took 6 months before I was completely healthy and tons of vet visits, so I didn’t like going anymore.” Must have been very stressful on you and mom. I am very grateful you survived!

Riley finds it annoying when she does not get her way and dislikes it when her mom leaves her at home. Riley says she does not like to cuddle when she is awake. Riley adds that, “I always wanted to be in charge from the day she (mom) brought me home.”

I asked Riley how she and her mom saved each other, and Riley said, “I was saved because I was in a kill shelter. At 3 my brother Tucker died from leukemia. Mom and I had to take care of each other. We were both very sad and missed him desperately. He was only 6, so I think we both saved each other emotionally then.”

So another interesting tidbit about Riley is that she was not the original pup her mom and Tucker had met. “When Mom picked me up at the shelter after I was spayed she realized I was a different puppy than the one she and Tucker had met. That puppy had clear nails while mine were back. Instead of taking me back in and saying they gave her the wrong puppy, she kept me. She figured it was meant to be.” Isn’t that just wonderful how things worked out?!

I am so grateful to Riley for sharing her story! Riley’s life has been saved several times. Who says cats are the only ones with “nine lives?!” Bol! Many thanks to Riley for being a feature “Meet Me Monday” on my blog. Please leave a comment for Riley below. If you would like to share your story, please email me at abbydawgblog@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Spread the Joy...Spread the Love!

Since the weather has been nicer, mamma and I have been going on more walks and longer walks, too. There are lots and lots of new smells to keep me sniffing for hours.

We also see more people on our daily adventures. Sometimes people cross the road to stay away from me. Can you imagine such a thing?! Other people approach saying all kinds of nice things in really silly, high-pitch voices and ask to pet me. Either way, I just like my walks and sniffing adventures, but if mamma allows it, I’ll stop and let people pet me. Pets are always good, right!

One time, we met an elderly man who was in a wheelchair, and his daughter was pushing him along when they stopped to gush over me. He said I reminded him of his dog from when he was a little boy. His daughter said I made her dad smile.

Another time, a lady stopped us and asked to pet me. She decided to walk with us for a little bit of the way, and she told us the story of her dog who just passed away. You could tell she missed him a lot.

We seem to make some people happy, if only momentarily. You never know who you may meet along the way, or what a few minutes of interaction may mean to someone. It is always good to smile and say hello, and if you are a dog, let them pet you, as long as your human says it is ok. Spread the joy…spread the love!

"Meet Me Monday": Penny's Story

Penny owns her mummy, Linda, (@lindamjis) a twitter pal from Vancouver, Canada. Penny is a 17-year-old, female, domestic short hair cat. Penny weighs about nine pounds, and her coat color is brown/black tiger-stripe with white. Penny and Linda were nice enough to share their story of love and friendship, and my favorite part is that an older kitty got a second chance!

Linda went into the S.P.C.A. on February 3, 2006, to look at the cats, and according to Penny, this is “the day I adopted mummy.” Penny continues the story of their first encounter.

If humans wash their hands, they are allowed to reach into the cages to touch the cats. When mummy reached into my cage, I reached out my face for her to stroke it, and all I could think of was, “Gee, that felt nice for both of us!” Mummy then went on to look at the other cats, but she didn’t reach into any of their cages. Only one cat seemed to just look at mummy curiously, probably wondering who she was. The other cats didn’t pay any attention to mummy at all. I watched mummy the whole time wondering why she was not near me where I was, and I think mummy knew I was watching her because she looked at me again before leaving. Mummy had wanted a kitten, but didn’t find one that day, so she left. I was a ten year old cat just sitting there hoping for a forever home, and I must have left a good impression on mummy because she thought about me for the next four days. On February 7, 2006, mummy came back to the S.P.C.A. and adopted me, and we’ve been happy together ever since!

Linda describes what happened when she first brought Penny home.

When Penny first arrived in her and my place, she began to inspect the place, top to bottom! So cute! When she was done, that’s when I told her she was beautiful, and she came right over to me! She and I have been happy together ever since!

Penny loves catnip, like most kitties. Penny’s eyes get wide when Linda pulls the baggie of nip out, and Penny gets all excited and eats the nip up off of the scratching board. Penny still gets scared when someone knocks at the door and will go run and hide under the bed. Linda says that Penny has always been a very gentle girl. Sometimes when Penny is laying down and Linda is stroking her, Penny will gently hold on to Linda’s hand so the petting doesn’t stop. Linda says Penny is a happy and healthy kitty, and “I am so glad, and lucky, that I adopted Penny, she is a really great friend. I love her so much.”

Many thanks to Penny and Linda for being a feature “Meet Me Monday” on my blog. Please leave a comment for Penny and Linda below. If you would like to share your story, please email me at abbydawgblog@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

"Meet Me Monday": Cook's Story

Cook (@CookTheDog) is my twitter pal from Holland. Cook is a 19-pound, male, mixed breed, believed to be primarily a Lhasa terrier mix, and approximately six years old. Cook’s mom and Cook himself were nice enough to share their amazing story on how they became a family. I am pretty sure you will love it as much as I do!

In 2011 Cook’s future mom and dad decided to settle in one place and adopt a dog. Mom read in a local newspaper about an animal shelter in La Linea, Spain called “Animal in Need” that is owned by a Dutchman. Hundreds of dogs were transported from the shelter via land and air from Spain to Holland to be fostered until adoption.

Mom found on the Internet that a woman was fostering an underweight, beige and white dog from the Spanish shelter in Holland. When his future mom and dad went to visit, mom says, “It was love at first sight” when she saw the dog, later named, Cook. Within ten minutes of riding in the car, Cook was fast asleep with his head on dad’s knee, while mom drove their new family home.

Cook’s mom says, “He was very timid but he obviously had had a home at some time since he knew a couple of tricks.” Cook needed to be housebroken, which took about a week, and he loved walking outside. In the beginning, he would howl when left alone, and it took a little bit of time for him to realize mom and dad would always return. Cook also had allergies and was itching all the time. It turns out he is allergic to wheat, so he eats a “Barf” (bone and raw food) diet, no dry food. Mom says within two weeks of the new diet, the allergies had cleared up.

Today, mom says Cook is “a cocky little thing full of self-confidence.” He also walks with a pack (other dog pals) three times a week, and he is now completely socialized. One of his friends from the pack, Boy, taught Cook not to be afraid to go in the water. Mom continues, “He definitely is a very happy little dog, very affectionate, good with the cats (also from a shelter getting a second chance) and good with children.”

Cook loves to steal clothes and slippers and hide them in his basket, so mom and dad cannot leave any clothes hanging around or they will become Cook’s. He also loves car rides and goes most places with mom when he is allowed to actually go with her. Mom does not like to leave Cook in the car or tied outside of a store. Cook likes bones more than anything else, and he buries them everywhere, preferably in dad’s bed.

According to the vet Cook never learned to play. Cook says, “I have a ball, but I have no clue what to do with it.” Cook has toys that he sleeps with in his basket. Cook says, “Pulling on a towel is fun. When I am wet mom dries me off and we pull on the towel.” Cook also says he used to hide undies and eat poop, just like me! And, like many of us doggies, Cook is afraid of fireworks and the vacuum cleaner.

So, as you can see, it’s pretty amazing that Cook travelled all the way from Spain to Holland to find his forever home. Cook is a great dog that is “loved to bits” by his mom and dad, and in turn, Cook “loves mommy and daddy to bits.”

Many thanks to Cook and his mom, Hansje Kalff, for being a feature “Meet Me Monday” on my blog. Please leave a comment for Cook and his mom and dad below. If you would like to share your story, please email me at abbydawgblog@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
